Formed as school friends at the age of 14 and only now just in their 20s, Edinburgh five-piece Jakil have welded their wide and eclectic musical influences together to create a stunning supershiny rock-pop sound that’s winning fans and turning influential heads across the UK and beyond.
In 2007, the guys were selected by BBC Radio One as Annie Mac’s House Band, asked to write and perform a jingle for Annie, and were interviewed live on Radio One just minutes after the Christmas number one was announced. Debut single “Who Are Ya?” also picked up its first national radio play, and grabbed further airplay across the UK.
Jakil also held the title of Radio Forth’s “One To Watch”, winning a competition that ran throughout the Scottish capital and beyond. Jakil picked up their gong at the prestigious Radio Forth Awards in Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms alongside the likes of Gabrielle, David Gray, and many others.
Since then, Jakil have provided support for the likes of Wheatus, Sandi Thom, Boy Kill Boy, The Twang, Amy Studt, Parka and T4’s ‘Orange Unsigned Act’ finalists Hip Parade, and played a specially requested support slot with Live And Unsigned winners The Detours.
Jakil have recorded and released two EPs, “Jakil EP” and “Plan B”, featuring all original songs. Both EPs are currently available in CD format at gigs and as downloads on iTunes and all other good download stores. Jakil have gigged extensively over the past four years and have played in some of Scotland’s most prestigious live music venues such as Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, O2 ABC, and Edinburgh’s biggest venue The HMV Picture House. They have secured radio play on stations as far afield as Aberdeen and Penzance, launched a free monthly newsletter and podcast for fans, become the first unsigned band to digitally “covermount” their music in a deal with a major newspaper (The Scotsman), and headlined major gigs across Edinburgh and Glasgow. They’ve also played to appreciative new audiences in London, Leeds, Cardiff, and across the north of England. In August, Jakil played regularly in their home city as part of the world’s biggest arts festival, and September saw a Freshers’ Week tour of Scottish student unions. New songs getting played to these new audiences include “Naked”, “Honey”, “Don’t You Come Running” and “Bad Boy In Dirty Jeans”, which is already becoming something of a fan favourite. Live versions of these new tracks have been filmed at recent gigs and soundchecks and have been uploaded onto YouTube. These tracks are currently being recorded along with a fleet of brand new tracks for Jakil’s next CD & online release. The band are confident that this new material is their best and most consistent work to date.
After a hugely successful winter gig in their home city and accompanying free single and video download release, high-school acoustic ‘lunch-time tour’, two of their songs selected to feature on a major new compilation album “A Sort Of Homecoming”, a new batch of new merchandise, and interest building by the day throughout the industry, the future is looking very bright indeed for Jakil.
